Sitting on the Teifi where Ceredigion meets Pembrokeshire, Cardigan has a mix of old stone, Victorian terraces and estate housing. We repair and renew the pebble dash on all of it.
A walk up from the old bridge over the Teifi shows how varied Cardigan's buildings are. There are stone warehouses by the river, colour-washed shops on the high street, Victorian terraces off the main roads and a ring of later housing on the hills around the town. Pebble dash turns up across all of them, sometimes as the original finish and sometimes added decades later to cover tired stonework.
We repair pebble dash in Cardigan and the villages either side of the river, on both the Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire banks. Typical work includes crack repairs, cutting out loose sections and patching them in, re-dashing whole walls, cleaning off algae and moss, and applying masonry coatings.
We also help owners decide when repair is no longer the sensible option. If dash is hollow across most of a wall, replacing it can be the more economical choice in the long run, and we will set out both routes so you can compare them properly.
Old market town, river valley and west-coast weather
Cardigan grew as a port and market town, and its centre still has many stone and brick buildings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Lots of these have been rendered or dashed over the years, sometimes with hard cement mixes that do not suit soft, solid walls. Further out, twentieth-century council and private estates brought semis, terraces and bungalows where pebble dash was the usual finish from day one.
The town is a few miles inland from the mouth of the Teifi, so it avoids the very worst of the coastal battering, but it still gets plenty of wet westerly weather off Cardigan Bay. The river valley holds damp air, and properties lower down near the water can stay damp for long spells. Houses on the higher ground catch the wind.
That combination produces a few familiar faults. Older buildings show bulging and blown areas where cement dash has separated from stone. Estate houses develop cracks around openings and at corners, often with loose render along the bottom course where splashback keeps it wet. North-facing walls in the valley pick up green algae quickly.
When we repair dash here, we match the approach to the wall. Older solid walls generally do better with breathable materials that let moisture out, while modern cavity houses can take a conventional sand and cement repair. Either way, we plan around dry, mild spells so the new work cures properly.
Common pebble dash repairs in and around Cardigan
Blown dash on older stone buildings near the river and town centre
Crack and corner repairs on estate houses on the edges of town
Algae and moss removal from damp, shaded walls
Colour-matched patches where old repairs stand out
Re-dashing or re-rendering rental and family homes
Repairs to shops and commercial premises along the main streets
On the town's older buildings, the question is often whether to repair hard cement dash or take it off. Our pebble dash removal work always starts with checking the stone or brick underneath, because removal can damage a soft background. Where the dash is basically sound, patch repairs are usually the quicker and cheaper fix.
Yes. Cardigan sits right on the county boundary, and we cover St Dogmaels and Cilgerran on the Pembrokeshire side as well as Penparc, Gwbert and Aberporth in Ceredigion. Just let us know where the property is when you get in touch and we will arrange a survey.
My building is in the old town centre. Are there restrictions on the finish?
There may be. Cardigan's historic centre has a number of listed buildings and conservation controls. Before changing the colour or swapping dash for a different render, we suggest asking Ceredigion County Council or Pembrokeshire County Council, depending on the side of the river. Like-for-like repairs are usually more straightforward.
Why does dash near the river seem to fail faster?
Lower parts of town near the Teifi hold damp air and can stay wet for longer, so water sits in cracks and on the surface. Repeated wetting and frost loosen the render over time. We check these walls carefully for hollow areas and make sure drips and sills are shedding water properly.
Can you work on high-street shops without closing them?
Usually, yes. We can work in sections, keep doorways clear, and agree times for dusty or noisy jobs. Scaffold on a busy street may need a permit, and we will sort out the details and timing with you during the quote stage so trading is disrupted as little as possible.
What time of year is best for work in Cardigan?
Spring through early autumn generally gives the best drying conditions. Render needs dry weather above roughly 5°C to cure, so frosty or very wet weeks are best avoided. If you have an urgent repair in winter, we look for a mild spell and protect the work with sheeting.

What to expect when we survey in Cardigan
We look at every wall, tap the render to find hollow or drummy sections, and check how the building is made, as that decides which materials we use. Where matching matters, we bring aggregate samples to compare against your existing dash.
Our written quote sets out scaffold or access, parking and any permits on busier streets, and how we will plan around the weather. During the job we protect windows, doors and gardens, and we take everything away at the end. To book, call 07565 147 170 or use the contact form.

The size of the damaged area, how much loose render must come off, wall height, access and scaffold, the type of background and the finish all play a part. Breathable systems on older stone walls can differ from standard repairs. We survey first and give a fixed written quote rather than a rough figure.
Can you match new dash to my existing finish?
We get as close as we reasonably can, and we show samples before we start. On weathered walls fresh aggregate can look brighter at first, and some original stones are no longer available. If an even finish matters most, a coating or full re-dash of the elevation is the more reliable option.
Is cleaning pebble dash safe for the wall?
When done correctly, yes. We use a soft-wash method with suitable biocides rather than high-pressure jetting, which can knock stones off and force water into the wall. See our pebble dash cleaning page for more on how it works.
Can you render over my pebble dash instead of repairing it?
Sometimes. Rendering over dash only works if the existing coat is firmly bonded. If it is hollow, it needs removing first. We check this during the survey and explain which systems suit the wall, from sand and cement to thin-coat silicone or acrylic renders.
Can I stay in the house while you work?
Yes. Pebble dash repair is outside work, so you can carry on as normal indoors. There will be some noise when we cut out loose render, and windows near the work may need to stay closed while we sheet them. We will tell you in advance which days are likely to be noisiest.
